Blu ray movie review of Green Zone
June 28, 2010
An action movie starring Matt Damon should have been a box office hit. Instead, Green Zone barely made any noise at the box office. This is despite mostly good reviews from the critics. On an estimated budget of $100 million, Green Zone only managed to bring in $35 million domestically and $58 million in foreign box office. In today’s market place, it is hard to actually lose money when both domestic and international box offices are added together. According to the rumor, the studio green lit this film even though it didn’t like the script just to lure Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass to do the 4th installment of Bourne film. After watching Green Zone, I can definitely see why it failed at the box office. The overall plot and tone of the movie is so anti-Bush and Republicans that the film effectively cut out half of the domestic audience. You can see why studios usually shy away from very political movie.
The plot involves the aftermath of the second Iraq war. Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller is tasked with finding the WMD left behind by the Iraqi army. When each intelligence fails to pan out, Miller is suspicious of the “evidence” provided. Miller gets suspicious and starts asking questions. CIA operative named Marty is also suspicious about the existence of WMD in the first place. Together, they piece together clues that point to massive lies and cover up that initiated the second Iraq war.
Without giving away the main plot, it is fairly obvious what the overall point of the movie is. That is to blame the previous administration for going to war Iraq. While the movie is very good speculation on what might have happened, it will polarize the audiences with the heavy political message. On a very objective level, the movie is quite good painting a picture of what could have happened that led to President Bush going to war with Iraq. Overall, if you were expecting a Bourne type of movie, you will be very disappointed. Instead, this is more of a political movie than an action movie.

The Usual Suspects Blu Ray
August 27, 2009
The Usual Suspects Blu Ray Review

In the annals of “A HA!” moments in the movie history, The Usual Suspects rank near the top of the list. The movie put Bryan Singer on the map as one of the hottest director in the Hollywood as well. The movie is not flashy with lots of action and heavy effects. Instead, it is mostly subtle and somewhat slow moving movie done in flashback. The script, written by Christopher McQuarrie, is one of the best crime/thriller story written for the movie. Couple this with great acting and you have one of the most entertaining movies from any era.
The story starts out as simple heist/crime movie told from a felon brought in by a police for a line up to identify the criminals who ended up working for Keyser Soze. Kevin Spacey plays the felon named Roger Kint who recalls the details of the crime and how they all came to be involved with such a dangerous man. The audiences are taken for a ride from the start. He tells a very plausible and complicated story of everyone involved. The ending will leave you speechless and in awe of the execution.
Kevin Spacey and the entire ensemble cast including Gabriel Byrne and Stephen Baldwin did an excellent job. Also, Chazz Palminteri played the duped detective fairly well. The ending of this movie is considered to be one of the best ending with a twist. When the entire movie goes in one direction and it suddenly flip flops, the audiences might get little angry. Not so with this movie. It just makes you want to watch the whole thing over and see the little things you might have missed. This movie is definitely worth second and third viewing.

Blue-Ray dvd movie review of Reservoir Dogs
December 15, 2008
This film launched Tarantino's directorial career. With small budget and tight plot and dialogue, he manages to make the "two character in a room" movie exciting to watch. By now, most people either loveTarantino's film or down right hate it. I don't think there are many in the middle when it comes to Tarantino movies.
The fans will immediately see Tarantino's style in this movie. He uses extreme short burst of violence and dis joined time lines. Both of these elements are present in this movie as well as Pulp Fiction. The ear cutting scene stands out as it is truly violent scene. Some director might have elected to not show the details but notTarantino . We are treated to such scenes in most of his movies. There are very few action sequences for a "heist" film. This most likely is attributed to the low budget of the movie. The entire heist except for Mr. Pink's escape sequence is relayed to the audience through dialogue. This might sound boring but it is quite gripping as you want to find out what happened.
Crime boss Joe Cabot puts together a crew to do a big heist involving diamond. They are given color coded names to protect their real names. During the heist, police ambushes the entire crew. This leads to escapes by each member by their own means. Later, they come together at a warehouse and the accusations fly. Of course this leads to some interesting conversation and ear cutting scenes. The audience piece together of what really went down through the dialogue. This soundssimilar to The Usual Suspect except this is better film in my opinion.
Tarantino pulls off a remarkable film where there are very sparse action scenes for a heist movie. This film might turn off some that have aversion to extreme violence. The cast are down right perfect as you can see the great chemistry between the actors. This is a must for anyTarantino fans. The Blu-ray version doesn't add too much except better video and audio quality. They should have included some more bonus materials. Never the less, it is a must buy for any fans.

Blu-ray review of TransSiberian
November 5, 2008

This film is one of the best movies to be released in 2008. It is a film that has tight script and plot with great performances by the actors. A lot of people are comparing this to numerous Hitchcok films, which is a great compliment.
Iowa couple that has finished missionary work in China is returning home via Transsiberian railway. Husband, played by Woody Harrelson has passion for trains. The wife played by Emily Mortimer, goes along for the ride. Both of them don't foresee the danger lurking around the corner. On the train, they meet younger couple traveling toward same destination. This is the start of the trouble. There are drugs and mafias
Brad Anderson has made a well paced thriller that uses the Siberia as a big part of the movie, he plays out this thriller in the harsh, cold winter of Siberia. I was not familiar with this director. After watching this film, I will be sure to watch his previous works.
Overall, Transsiberian is an excellent thriller. It has a great plot, well developed characters, wrapped in a greater thriller set in Siberia.

Ocean’s Thirteen Blu-ray movie review
November 5, 2008

After romping and stealing across the Europe in Ocean's twelve, the gang is back in the familiar setting of Casino. The movie works better than the previous one. It isn't all over the map with the plot twists and many locations. Seems like the single heist with single motive seems to work better.
Danny Ocean and his gang are back in Las Vegas. This time around the motive for the heist is the revenge. Willy Banks, played by Al Pacino, who owns series of casino rips off one of Danny's gang member in Reuben Tishkoff causing a heart attack. The utter disregard displayed by Willy Banks forces Danny to target casino owned by Willy Banks. This time around he joins forces with Terry Benedict to take down Willy Banks.
Although I liked this film better than the previous one, this movie was bit dissapointing. The plot seemed to be hollow and lacking focused direction. This felt like an exercise to cram in top rated stars in one movie to entice the audience. These are proven mega star actors with good credentials. The movie isn't boring but it isn't all that exciting.
I had decent fun watching this movie. It's decent heist flick with funny moments. Overall, it does not capture the magic of the first movie.

Final Cut of Blade Runner on Blu-ray format
November 3, 2008

When I think of a great science fiction film or just one of the best films period, I think of Blade Runner. This movie has to be one of the greatest science fiction movie, one which will make you think during and after the movie. With the Blu-ray edition, you get all the previous cuts and Ridley Scott's final cut of the movie. The different cuts are significant in that they have different endings in some of them. So, the final cut is most likely what Ridley Scott intended to be in his vision.
A great science fiction film will not rely on the techs and gadgets. Instead, it makes you think and challenges you to see different subject matters in a new light. Blade Runner challenges you to think about what it means to be human and what effects technology can have on human society.
The movie is based on Phillip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep. The book and movie have some differences but the movie retains the basic idea of the book. Set in 2019 Los Angeles, Blade Runner starts off as a detective story that follows Richard Deckard played by Harrison Ford as a special police who tracks down and terminates replicants, artificial intelligent beings created to serve as work force, that have escaped the work colonies to arrive on Earth. The hunt for a particular set of replicants challenges the preconception of what it means to be human. There are various moral ambiguity that pervades the movie from start to finish. Ultimately, it is up to the viewers to answer these questions.
The movie is simply amazing. It is well directed by Ridley Scott with stunning visuals and atmosphere with tremendous music score. This movie reminds of Data's quest to be human except Data wouldn't murder anyone. This is a must watch film of any genre.

Legal Thriller Michael Clayton Blu-ray movie review
November 2, 2008

Michael Clayton works as a fixer for the NY law firm. He does the down and dirty work for the firm. Legal and illegal methods are used to solve any type of problem incurred by his clients.
U-North is a large agriculture chemical company . Their in-house chief counsel is Karen Crowder played by Tilda Swinton wants to close off the class action lawsuit. Clayton's firm is hired to hanlde the case. His co-council Arthur Edens played by Tom Wilkinson, has mental breakdown where He strips off during a deposition. The case and the back story begins to unravel before Clayton.
The performances are what stands out in this movie, with Clooney perfectly playing the lead role with just the right amount of flash. There aren't too many character developments, it is mostly plot and performance driven. There are many cliche' roles including his son and his righteous cop brother. But as I've said, this is largely plot and performance driven movie.
In the end, this is a brilliant film all around with a great performance by the lead and supporting actors. director Sydney Pollack directs the movie in competent manner. This is a film that will make you think after the credits roll.

Blu-ray movie review of The Departed
October 24, 2008

This film is one of Scorsese's finest work. Scorsese delivers another great film backed by great script and great acting. The credit should go to people who penned this movie and the original creators. But, Scorsese along with Damon and Dicaprio has created uniquely American flavored film. Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon deliver incredible performances throughout the movie.
The acting is outstanding. Leonardo DiCaprio gives his best performance of the year. Seems like he was born to play this role. Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson give incredible performance as the "bad" guys. And, Mark Wahlberg is perfect as the cop. Ray Winstone, Alec Baldwin, and Martin Sheen are good, too.
Inevitably, people will compare this film to the original Hong Kong film. Some things are better than in original movie. And, some things are better in the remake. The pacing is bit faster in the original as the dots are connected fairly fast. However, the remake does incredible job with the story line. It makes it feel like it was not made from foreign movie. There is gritty American feel to it.
No film is perfect and the only disappointment will be from the people that have seen the original work. The fanboys will always bash a remake. Other than that, nobody should have problem with the story, direction, acting, and the pace of this incredible film.

Horror classic The Shining on Blu-ray
October 23, 2008

It's well know that Stephen King didn't like Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining. King stated that Kubrick didn't fully understand the genre of horror. Kubrick decided to pass on the typical gore or Omen style horror in favor of more psychological approach. You don't get people here jumping out of the dark time after time to slash another person. What you get is slow build up of dread followed by violent burst toward the end.
Plot is fairly simple, Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall's characters are hired to take care of a hotel. Slowly, Nicholson loses reality and goes after his own family.
One of the most significant aspects of this movie is the physical and psychological isolation felt by the entire family in the remote hotel. The film starts off with a lengthy scene following Jack as he drives up to the old hotel for his interview followed by the living condition of isolation felt by the family. The viewers can feel the isolation and growing uneasiness building toward the end. The scary part is that this can happen in reality. That people can lose it like Nicholson. There are no buckets of blood and retarded contraption. It's just pure dread and mood built on isolation.
Overall this is an excellent horror movie with worthy acting job. Kubrick does great job portraying the isolation and the mood of the film. It's a must see for any horror film fans.

American Psycho Blu-ray movie review
October 23, 2008

American Psycho was Directed by Mary Harron and based On The Novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The Movie takes place on Manhattan New York, amidst Business executives, Presidents, and CEOs. And, in middle of all these people is the buisnessman Patrick Bateman. He is an ultimate power businessman with expensive tastes and expensive habits. But underneath the surface, he is disturbed killer. He may have flesh, blood skin and bone, but inside, he is hollow and monsterous. He describes himself and emotionless save for two emotions.
Cristian Bale was excellent and this role most likely launched him into more visible roles in Batman and other films. You truly believe when watching that he is a disturbed monsters. The confusing downward spiral into madness is totally believable. Simply excellent performance in this movie.
American Psycho is almost a perfect viewing for anyone who loves an intelligent movie with Oscar worthy acting all round. Willem Dafoe makes a classic appearance as the cop. Reece Witherspoon is his shallow, vapid fiance who is so busy planning the wedding that she doesn't notice that Patrick is a psycho. The entire cast does admiral job in this movie. Don't miss this great film and with Blu-ray release you have no excuse to miss this film.
