Blu-ray movie review of Remeber the Titans

November 10, 2008

remember the titans 300x300 Blu ray movie review of Remeber the Titans

This is a story about the integration of a high school football team in Virginia in 1970. It's based on true story and delivered in a typical Disney fashion. Family friendly and little cliche. A lot you might cringe at another sports drama. But, this is much more than just a simple football story. It's about the football team's integration in the face of racism.

The story takes place suburb in Virginia where football is very important. T.C. Williams High School under federal mandate, integrates the school. Herman Boone played by Danzel Washington is hired as first black coach to lead the football team. Of course, there are many that oppose this hiring due to Boone's skin color. Apply standard cliche after this. The team comes together through coach's effort and team begins to win. The community lines up behind the coach and the integrated team.

Denzel's performance stands out among the cast. He is an Oscar caliber actor who delivers a solid performance. The other casts do an adequate job in their role. As with other sports movie, each actors don't get as much time on screen to show their talent. It's team effort and it works.

I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good family friendly flick. This movie is entertaining and has a great message.

Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda Blu-ray movie review

November 6, 2008

kung fu panda 300x300 Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda Blu ray movie review

Dreamworks has finally made a animation that can stand up to Pixar/Disney animation films. Sure, Shrek franchise has done very well for Dreamworks. However, I always felt that Dreamworks has always lagged behind Pixar in terms of story telling and overall execution of animation works. The animation quality, story line, actors involved in this movie is all top notch.

The story like any other animation story line is not overly complicated. It's classic underdog story line that's been done to death in animation and other family friendly movies. This however, does not mean it is borign or trite. The story is about a Chinese town in the valley with a flourishing kung-fu culture is about to be attacked by an evil kung fu master. Po, who dreams to be a kung fu master some how bumbles into the role of savior.

The script is excellent and Dreamworks does a great job in animation quality. It is very funny from start to finish. I think they did great job creating the look and feel of ancient China inhabited by talking animals. The fight sequences are great and very detailed. It's pretty refreshing to actually see a monkey practicing monkey style kung fu and preying mantis practicing preying mantis style kung fu. It's also pretty funny.

Overall it is a great film enhnaced by great voice work from Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman. My only gripe is that Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, and others A list actors that had very small roles in terms of screen time. It is mostly dominated by Jack Black. These other characters could have been nore fleshed out to utilize such great casting. Otherwise, it is a must own for Blu-ray owners.

Blu-ray movie review of holiday classic A Christmas Story

November 4, 2008

christmas story 300x300 Blu ray movie review of holiday classic A Christmas Story

A Christmas story is a classic holiday movie that is very funny and entertaining every time you watch it. No one should miss this holiday classic. And, you most likely have seen it when it is on during the Christmas season. One of the cable channels usually run this movie over and over. I usually pick and choose and watch the funny moments from the movie. I doubt anyone has missed this classic gem unless you happen to live outside of United States.

This is a tale of a Ralphie Parker played by Peter Billingsley growing up in the 40s or 50s, not really sure. He desperately wants a Red Ryder Ranger Model Air Rifle for Christmas but his mother warns him that "you will shoot your eye out." However, his father gives him the BB gun for Christmas. Of course, he almost shoots his eyes out. This might not seem like much of Christmas tale but it is a fantastic Christmas story.

Jean Shepherd narrates the movie and Peter Billingsley plays the Ralph Parker, or Ralphie. He is fantastic in his role. Not sure what he is up to these days. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon plays Ralphie's parents and are great at playing them.

I usually forget about this movie until it is on during Christmas season. However, I found this on Blu-ray and it is great addition to the collection. Ultimately this is a warm and upbeat film recommended for any one looking for a great family holiday film.

Blu-ray movie review of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth

October 29, 2008

journey to the center of the earth 300x300 Blu ray movie review of Jules Vernes Journey to the Center of the Earth

Fans of Jules Verne novels might be disappointed with this effort. People expecting a great translation of Verne classic might not like what they see. However, if you are looking for a thrilling blockbuster movie. this is decent pop corn inducing flick to waste few hours.

Trevor Anderson played by Brendon Fraser is a professor of geology, whose brother disappeared 10 years ago. The duo ran a scientific lab that's being threatened with budget cuts, and during a visit of his nephew, Sam played by Josh Hutcherson, the sensors placed in Iceland alerts them to some activity. The two of them head to Iceland to investigate the activity.

They meet up with a guide, Hannah played by Anita Briem, who takes them up the mountain near the sensors. This is where the fun or adventure begin. The cave gives in and they are trapped. They head deeper into cave and find that Verne's account was not just a fiction but in fact a true description.

The actors did a reasonable job with the CGI background and CGI monsters and animals. I think they tried too hard to make this into a 3-D film. Have you watched any GOOD movie that's done in 3-D? It would have been a fun movie without trying to make this into 3-D film. If you happened to catch it in theater with 3-D glasses, it might have added little more enjoyment. Otherwise, the Blu-ray edition includes the 3-D as well as the 2-D version.

Blu-ray movie review of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

October 19, 2008

harry potter and the chamber of secrets 300x300 Blu ray movie review of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Chris Columbus has done pretty good job on the first film. So, it is not surprising he has been asked to helm the second film in the franchise. The second film actually improves on the first film by being little darker and grittier if you can imagine children book or movie being dark or edgy. This makes for better flim for adults and children alike.

The plot and pace seems to better than the first one and executed better. The movie itself is over two hours but it does not drag in any part of the movie. The acting job by the main casts were spot on and nothing to complain about. The supporting roles were pretty good as well from top to bottom. The high production value is evident througout the film.

Like the first movie, chamber of secrets follows the book pretty closely. This does not mean scene for scene or dialogue to dialogue transfer. Instead, it hits the main plots and tone pretty well. No major plot or character alterations were done to the movie. Which is pretty smart because I'm sure millions fanboys and fangirls would of cried foul if there were major changes.

Overall, it's enjoyable film with great performances with great plot. It is not Oscar worthy stuff but most of the fans will enjoy the movie.

Blu-ray movie review of Alvin and the Chipmunks

October 19, 2008

alvin and the chipmunks 300x300 Blu ray movie review of Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the chipmunks in digital form works for the kids. I guess just about anyone that has ever watched television cartoons in the earlier years would recognize these characters. And with the arrival digital effects, it makes sense to bring back these characters. Does the film work in computer generated form as it did in traditional cartoon? I guess it's whether you have a kid or not.

Jason Lee is an outstanding casting choice for Dave Seville, the original Chipmunks caretaker. Lee does pretty good job of interacting with these digital characters. We all like Lee in his television series. And, he does excellent job as far as acting goes.

The plot is nothing new if you have watched the cartoon. It's predictible and laced with sugar. Still it wasn't torturing to watch the entire film.

It was more for younger kids, but it is not too bad for adults. It kinda funny to hear all the old chipmunk songs and there were plenty of funny moments. Chipmunks themselves were well-animated as expected.

I think it is very likely kids enjoy this movie. If you were a fan of the show as kid, it might be trip down the old memory lane. Otherwise, it is passable entertainment for your kids.

2007 Summer blockbuster Transformer finally arrives on Blu-ray

October 14, 2008

transformer 300x300 2007 Summer blockbuster Transformer finally arrives on Blu ray

Above anything else, this movie is about action. Like it or not, we have come to expect and get a decent action flicks from Michael Bay. It is not Oscar worthy stuff but it delivers great mindless fun for few hours at a stretch. Transformers is a quintessential Michael Bay movie. Don't expect anything less or anything more. If you don't, you will be rewarded with 2.5 hours of fun experience.

Transformers begins with the reason for the alien robots' existence and why they are here on Earth. How the all important AllSpark was lost into the vacuum of space after the robots divided between good and evil. Falling onto Earth, a handful of these entities travelled the galaxy to find this the Allspark. Decent plot device and execution. Visually, the film is astounding. ILM have outdone themselves once again and delivered a great visual effects. The robots look real and have great substance. As with any Bay movies, the explosions are great and plenty. The music is pretty decent at best nothing to write home about.

The acting is pretty good and Shia LaBeouf does a good job in the lead role with good humorous lines. Megan Fox is just there for eye candy. Nothing wrong with that. There were a couple of moments when I was worried that things were going to little too cheesy but it didnt get too cheessy. Also, there were plenty of funny moments mixed in with great serious ones.

Overall, it is great movie if you go into it expceting a fun popcorn movie. Great actions sequence scattered with funny one liners. Nothing Oscar worthy but great none the less.

Blu-ray review of Speed Racer motion picture

October 10, 2008

speed racer 300x300 Blu ray review of Speed Racer motion picture

This movie cause a lot of negative revies from the critics. The campy and outlandish cartoon style may have turned off the critics to this fun movie.. The animation is perfect for the atmosphere they're trying to create. Don't expect Matrix style effects. The effects used are so fitting for this movie because they're mostly cartoonish and the movie doesn't take itself too seriously.

This movie was pure fun. The Wachowskis truly know how to create a great movie. They just took their idea and imagination and ran with it. All the actors were terrific. I especially gives props to the actor who played the youngest Racer brother. Honestly, I thought that boy would sink the film but after seeing it, Speed Racer would not have been half as fun without him and the monkey. Emile Hirsch did exceptional, but my eye was mostly on the brilliant performances by John Goodman, Ricci and new comer Paul Litt who plays Spritle, Speed's mischievous little brother. I recommend this for the family, don't wait for the DVD get to the theaters while this stunning cinematography is on the big screen!

All in all, this is a great film for everyone, including adults and teens. The only people I would not recommend this film to would be those who don't think they can handle very fast-paced cutting, and cut scenes. Even with that exception, I would recommend to most anyone.

Pirates sequel The Dead Man’s Chest on Blu-ray

October 6, 2008

pirates dead mens chest 300x300 Pirates sequel The Dead Mans Chest on Blu ray

It is usually a bad sign if a popcorn movie like this clocks in at well over two hours. the bad thing about that running time is, that not a single plot point is resolved in this film. Everything that is brought into the movie as being there for our hero's to overcome, is still there when the credits roll those ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY MINUTES finally end. The movie basically sets up the third and final movie.

Dead Man's Chest picks up basically where the first left off, but Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightly) are arrested on Port Royale by Lord Cutler Beckett. The charge: Conspiring to aid in the escape of noted pirate, Capt. Jack Sparrow (Depp). The possible penalty: Death by hanging.

Cutler gives Turner an option, however. Find Sparrow and retrieve a certain key to a certain treasure chest, and all will be forgiven. Meanwhile, Sparrow and his motley crew have beached on a remote South Pacific island (thanks to Jack's non-functioning compass) inhabited by cannibals. While the crew is imprisoned in huge, round, wooden cages suspended from high cliffs, Sparrow is treated like a demigod.

After a series of goofy, but funny chases, the fun cannot last here, though, and with Turner's help, most of the men (and Jack) beat a hasty retreat from the venue. A side trip to visit what seems like a voodoo conjurer, Tia Dalma, sheds a little more light on things. A key such as Beckett described to Turner does indeed exist; and it opens the chest which contains the still-living heart of Davy Jones, the mythical sailor punished for all eternity for falling in love with a woman.

Johnny Depp is again the center of this film. His performance is more than fantastic. Everything he does is pure magic and he really helps you to take the ride of your life throughout the whole film. This is most certainly his best performance ever, although he has created many different characters in his career, Jack Sparrow is his most complex and strangest creation.

All in all, I was very pleased with this sequel when so many sequels lately are nothing but a two hour waste of time.

Review of Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix on Blu-ray

October 2, 2008

harry potter and order of phoenix 300x300 Review of Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix on Blu ray

For the most Harry Potter reader the susepense leading up to this movie was unbearable. How are they going to translate a the massive 900 page book to the movie screen, how are they going to tie together a storyline that in the 5th book breaks into dozens different story line.

This seemingly impossible task is well accomplished by good summation of plot and concentration of good action. Also, the thematic spirit of the story and Rowling's shining gift for characterization are given the fullest support in this film.

The film opens in Little Whinging with the dementor attack on Harry and Dudley. Mrs. Figg happens across the boys as if by accident just after Harry defeats the Dementors with his Patronus, but is never "outed" as a squib. The Dursleys were more worried than horrified, and never threatened Harry with expulsion from their house. The sheer vileness that audiences last saw in Prisoner of Azkaban was notable absent, leaving the view to wonder what happened to bring us the weak and whimpering version of the Dursleys that appears in this film.

When Harry is brought to the Order's headquarters, very little is made of the fact that the Noble House of Black was once a bastion of pure-blood fanaticism. Kreature makes a very weak appearance, and the simple existence of Regulus Black was never even touched upon.

Fred and George remain great comic relief, but the ever developing character of Ginny Weasley is not much developed. Even more upsetting was the notable absence of Mrs. Weasly's growing concern for her family's safety. I thought that one of the most touching moments in the book was the chapter in which Mrs. Weasly attempts of banish the boggart only to have it continually morph into the horrifying visages of various dead loved ones. Bill and Charlie were also not mentioned, leaving the viewer to wonder if the film franchise plans to reduce the Weasly family from 9 to 7.

As for the climax---it seems there was some last-minute editing. One can't help but wonder if the Blu-ray will contain extra scenes of magic-war. It is truly the best end to a Potter film to date. The ending clearly hints at the chaos and truly dark proceedings that await in Film Six.
