Halloween remaked by Rob Zombie on Blu-ray
October 20, 2008

There have been a lot of remakes of old horror movies in recent years. Halloween is one of the most successful horror franchise. So, it is no surprise the studio decided to cash in on the remake trend. The original Halloween is one of the best horror franchise when it comes to pure slasher genre. So, I had high expectation of this remake.
This isn't a bad movie overall if you go into it with proper expectation. It is pretty average movie regardless. The whole backstory of Myers and humanizing him didn't sit too well with me. The boy Myers becomes a serial killer because of bad childhood. No new territory covered here. And the progression through asylum and ultimately to a killer. The movie felt rushed and little on the B side. Acting wasn't all that great and Rob Zombie does adequate job as director.
At least Zombie does not completely change the plot. But, he should of stayed more true to the original IMO. I'm not saying he should of made scene for scene movie but the new one feels entirely too different. Zombie tried to do too much with the original movie which was pretty good in the first place. Overall, its decent horror flick. You might enjoy it more if you have not watched the original.

Blu-ray movie review of Strangers starting Liv Tyler
October 20, 2008

The plot of this movie brings nothing new to the table. Yet from the start to finish, it delivers different experience as a horror film. It does not rely on gorefest and buckets of blood. Instead, it slowly builds psychological torture to the finish. This movie does admiral job of staying away from your regular teen slasher trash. It is fairly decent movie from start to finish with some flaws.
This movie is pretty thin on plot, background story, character development, and character interactions. Audiences are pretty much thrown into a story where ton of bad stuff start to happen for the main characters. The plot is pretty straight forward where a couple is hounded by masked strangers. The story unfolds from there to somewhat of let down ending.
The acting was fairly good. I'm a big fan of Liv so I didn't see too much wrong with her acting. The other actors don't really have much to do. The plot of the story was not that important so you just sit there go along with the flow.
The film does its job of giving scaring you from start to finish. The each sound and suspense is felt and is pretty scary. Much better than your regular hack and slash films. This had the feeling of Shining where you were mentally tortured and not just visually assaulted by gores. Overall, it's pretty decent horror film if you can call it that.

Romero brings us another zombie flick in Land of the Dead
October 19, 2008

The George A. Romero's return to the genre that made him famous and adored by many fans fall little short. Recently, zombie movies have gained great popularity due to various successful films. This trend most likely allowed Romero to secure the go ahead for this installment in his zombie series.
The film does excellent job in action packed, bloody and gory, manner. And, the presence of social commentary is present as was in Romero's other works. Mixed in with the action and gore are commentary on human follies. It's also got a good amount of nostalgia for fans who watched the original Romero works.
The plot is pretty thin but it really does work well and this is a zombie movie in line with other Romero zombie flicks. Romero has again created something great on a pretty thin budget and makes it look pretty good with decent amount of special effects. The cast are all pretty decent, and the acting job is right on as well.
All in all I was little bit disappointed also because I had such high expectation. I like it that Romero is bringing in steady diet of zombie remakes. Hope it gets better with next one.

70s classic horror The Omen on Blu-ray
October 14, 2008

The great success of William Friedkin's 'The Exorcist' in 1973 spawned numerous copy cat movies concerning evil possesion or satanic presence in human beings. They Omen is the best of the bunch directed by Richard Donner who gave it a mainstream audience in the same vein as the Exorcist. An excellent writing and a terrifyingly a terrific soundtrack set this movie apart from other copy cat films.
Robert Thorn the American ambassador to Great Britain watches his wife's pregnancy when a priest tells him that his newborn has died, but he convinces him to substitute the baby with another child to spare his wife. Watching their young child growing up, he starts show unnerving signs that surround the child. This leads Robert on a whirlwind investigation that all points to his son being the Anti-Christ himself.
Directed by Richard Donner and with an Oscar-winning score by Jerry Goldsmith, The Omen is a true horror classic that has aged beautifully and spawned a remake in recent year.
Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, as the child's parents, manage to remain likable despite being ignorant and unaware for most part. But they are not bad people; perhaps that, the charisma of the performers, and the terror of the situation makes the viewer care about them. Billie Whitelaw, as the devilish nanny Mrs. Baylock, gives a spine-tinglingly creepy performance; perhaps only surpassed by Harvey Stephens's as Damien himself.
This movie is a definite classic in my books, and even now, many years after my first viewing it still feels like a great movie.
Do yourself a favor and see this classic movie before watching the remake.

80s vampire flick The Lost Boys on Blu-ray
October 10, 2008

This is one of the few vampires movies or any movies that you will watch over and over. It is fun ride each and every time. It has great funny jokes. And when I say jokes I don't mean toilet humor or anything like you seen in those scary movie series. The jokes are relevent to the story itself. And it makes good quotes. It's a great teenage vampire movie from the 80s.
The Lost Boys is an entertaining modern vampire movie with lots of flash, style, 1980's music, and outlandish effects and design. There's really no substance to this picture, but I don't think that the film-makers cared about that. Instead, they just made a picture strictly catered to the young crowd that is really just a great fun to watch. There are no deep meaning or great symbolisms.
These actors were perfectly cast for this movie. The soundtrack was perhaps the better than the movie itself, as it was literally the best part of the movie. However, the performances were professional, witty, and realistically offered by these veteran actors.
Joel Schumacher has very up and down directing career. However, The lost boys is a great movie which makes up for some of the crapfest he has directed in the later years.

Cult classic Evil Dead 2 Blu-ray movie review
October 6, 2008

This movie is equal to the original Evil Dead, here we have ASH the lone survivor from the first encounter with the evil dead, fighting off the evil deadites again. ASH encounters some unexpected foes and now everyone must fight for the lives, or become the evil that hunts them.
Sam Raimi does an excellent job of keeping us scared in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, with the dead incarnation surrounding us. When ASH is alone in the cabin, we are alone in the cabin and every creaking sound we hear feels like it's right beside us. The eery feeling is not as terrifying as the original, because the original was a punch in the face of terror. This one is more of a drench you in the face with blood, instead of a punch. The touch of dark comedy is great. ASH versus his hand is some comic gold and is a great way to give you some breathing room when you're not terrified of what might happen next.
Campbell proves himself a master of face contortion, self-harm as well as flipping himself over! So many classic and outrageous scenes in such a short space of time. One of the funniest scene is when Jake is dragged into the cellar and a torment of pink blood comes pumping out. The camera work is as dynamic and as fast paced as in the first outing, the shot of ash standing by the remains of the bridge at the start of film standing out for its grandness among otherwise less cinematic shots.
Overall, "Evil Dead II" is a really fun ride, with a superior performance from Campbell. It may not be on the same level as the original in terms of horror or just general enjoyment, but it's still a blast.

Resident Evil – Blu-ray movie review
October 1, 2008

The zombie movie seemed to be a thing of the past. Sure they were still making them throughout the 90s, but we didn't really hear about them as much as we did films like Romero's 'Dead' films, the 'Return of the Living Dead' series, and so on. Nothing really new or exciting was being done with the concept. One place where it was really kept alive was in the world of video games, including one Resident Evil. Having only played the game once or twice myself I didn't know how to feel about a film adaptation. I mean let's be honest, few films based on these games get it right. Sure the Mario Brothers movie is fun in a so-bad-it's-good way, but was it really satisfying? I guess that depends on the viewer. Anyway, thanks to this movie the zombie subgenre was hot again.
A virus breaks out in a lab called the Hive where everyone is held in captivity and dies. All of a sudden we see a woman passed out in a shower, she has no idea who she is, she meets two other men who have no idea who they are, but they are taken by soldiers who take them underground to the Hive. There the three learn that they are fighters for this out break and that also they might be part of what happened. The main thing is that they control the Hive, but that gets more difficult when the virus has turned the people it killed into the living dead, zombies. The woman, Alice, turns into the leader and must find out why this happened and also how they can get out alive without contaminating the world.
Written and Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (AVP Alien Vs Predator, Event Horizon, Mortal Kombat) made an enjoyable horror film that mixes science-fiction and action quite well. Anderson gets an decent cast here, some of the performances from the actors are good. Although Anderson's writing script is quiet heavy at times and it doesn't always work (Especially the monster "Licker" could have used more work in the CGI department) but Anderson knows how to set up action sequences and moments of visual style are always been his best at film-making. This survival horror flick is based on a hugely popular game from Capcom and "Resident Evil" is one the best video game adaptations so far.
This is probably Paul WS Andersons best film it's not perfect, it's not brutal but gamers probably won't like it too much. The film is mildly entertaining but the lack of special effects and good hand to hand choreography you generally see in an Anderson film (Mortal Kombat,Soldier) are missing in the otherwise fun film. The trailer isn't misleading if you've seen it you know what you're getting into n action/horror that isn't supposed to be taken too seriously.

Day of the Dead – Blu-ray movie review
September 26, 2008

The third film in George A. Romero's immensely popular "Living Dead" trilogy is by far the bleakest and most complex film the director has ever worked on. "Day of the Dead" received a lot of negative press upon its release in 1985 - people picked apart unsavory characters, OVER-acting from a no-name cast, and outlandishly gory special effects that only Tom Savini himself could be proud of.
Months after the first dead rose from their graves, the world has seemingly become overrun. Deep in a storage bunker in Florida, a group of soldiers and a group of scientists have formed an uneasy alliance in order to try and discover something that can help reverse their spread. However Dr Logan is not making the progress that the soldiers require and Captain Rhodes becomes increasingly impatient and erratic as a result. Things continue to worsen as the zombies gather above and Logan's work gets more worrying.
To take the film up to true 'Classic' status, we are given some of the most memorable and lively characters put to film. The show stealer is Joseph Pilato as 'Captain Rhodes'; he..was...awe-inspiring! 'Memorable Quotes' should be filled with his script. He really does throw his all into the film and deserved an Oscar, or a new blood vessel! Two others come to mind; the sweet but crazed Dr. Logan, or 'Frankenstein' as Rhodes called him, who sadly passed away in 2000, and the zombie that he tames - Bub! They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
Day of the Dead is a must see for any horror/zombie fan. If you are one of the select few horror fans who haven't dabbed into Romero's zombie movies, then you should. Day of the Dead is my personal favorite out of the series, and remains as my favorite zombie movie of all time.

House of Wax – Blu-ray movie review
September 19, 2008

While HOUSE OF WAX will never be mistaken for Texas CHAINSAW MASSACRE or HALLOWEEN, it does try and ultimately succeed in being a worthy addition to quality horror film making. There is enough tension and enough implied gore in here to please the young audience of today and there is also enough explicit gore to please some of the purists of yesterday. Overall, it is quite a well done film that should do okay on Blu-ray.
Six kids on the way to a football game get stranded in a DELIVERANCE like setting and what ensues actually looks like it may have been taken out a discarded Deilverance sequel and the backwoods hicks seem to taunt the group. Eventually the group has to break up and half of them head into the desolate town to get some car parts. The other half of the group stays behind at camp and this sets up the second half of the film.
With the plot and the details, goofs are minor; the characters are this movie's strongest point, given that so many clichés are broken in it. For example, the two main male characters, Nick and Wade, are not by any means the idiotic types we're used to; although Dalton might fit better in this stereotype, not is he the only one to pay for this lack of consciousness. Some scenes are truly, satisfyingly horrible, making up for tense moments scattered around all the film. And, in the end, and although everything is decorously explained, it's easy to see that things won't go so easy to the surviving characters.
While the characters are developed, some of them are still kind of stupid. I know this is a horror film but some of their actions just left me confused. There were a lot of "don't do that" moments but this was kind of expected. The death scenes were pretty nice and stylish. There were some creative ones that are worth checking out. The killers looked scary and they were pretty effective. The ending was kind of disappointing though. I loved watching the whole museum melt down and it looked awesome but the ending still felt a little to simple. Also, I hope they do make a sequel since they left it open for one. In the end, House of Wax is a solid horror film that's worth checking out.

Dawn of the Dead – Blu-ray movie review
September 14, 2008

How will mankind behave in the end times? Will we turn into raving lunatics and attack one another? Will we try to slavishly hold onto some fabric of our society? Will we kick back and accept what is happening? Dawn of the Dead in some ways tries to answer that question. The movie, a remake of George Romero's classic 1978 sequel to `Night of the Living Dead,' throws a group of people together while society crumbles around them and allows the viewer to watch as humans seek to survive an onslaught of the undead.
Shortly after a number of strange cases begin to appear at the hospital where Ana (Sarah Polley) works, a bizarre zombie "epidemic" hits the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area full force. Sarah escapes her immediate threats and meets a number of other humans who decide to seek shelter inside a large shopping mall. As they learn that the zombie outbreak is much more widespread than anyone could have imagined, their chances of survival grow increasingly dim.
The remake of DOTD is probably one of the best horror movies I have seen. It has enough blood and guts to satisfy the gore freaks, but not too much to offend the casual viewer. I also really liked the (intentional) humor throughout the film. What really surprised me is that unlike most horror movies, you really get to know and care about the characters (most of them at least). You cheer when some of them die and frown when others stay alive.
The cast is well chosen and all act their parts brilliantly. Horror films have severely declined in recent years with most being turned into 20-something teen soap-opera trash. In DOTD 2004 you'll see a realistic group of people dealing enormous pressure with sense and reason. However, there is one particular moment in which a complete idiot character jeopardises the security for everyone else for the dumbest and stupidest of reasons. It really bugs me that this device is in the film and it damages DOTD 2004 and prevents it from having any everlasting integrity.
This remake turns out to be a fairly effective cannibal zombie movie even if it doesn't rise to the level of the original. There's a nice apocalyptic feel to much of the earlier portions of the film, and the screenplay allows for a reasonable bit of character development within the rather limited framework of the genre. There's even a very subtle homage to the great "Carnival of Souls," the far more gentle precursor to all these over-the-top zombie pictures, when a character describes himself as a church organist who sees his "calling" as "just a job." Although the film isn't really all that scary, "Dawn of the Dead" provides just enough tension and chills to make it worth seeing for any true horror film aficionado.
