Blu-Ray disc movie review of Elf
December 22, 2008
Will Ferrel makes a rare PG comedy instead of his usual rated R college humor movies. As a comedy and holiday family film, it works. Ferrel has made a career out of making college humor movies like Old School and Step Brothers. Thismovie is aimed at holiday movie crowd looking for an easy going film without crude jokes.
The movie is about an elf named Buddy. Buddy is a human that has been raised by Santa's elves at North Pole. And, as he is not an elf, he invariablecauses some mishaps when he grows up. When Buddy was a baby, he accidentally crawled into Santa's bag when Santa was delivering toys to an orphanage. The father elf, played by Bob Newhart , raises Buddy. Buddy grows up believing that he is an elf. Buddy is told the truth about his origin and sets out to find his real father, JamesCaan, in New York City. The movie goes from there and there are some heartwarming moments and extremely funny scenes.
Will Ferrel is perfect as an overgrown elf. I don't think they could have found better elf. Maybe Vince Vaughn could have been as funny seeing as his buddy Jon Favreau directed this movie. Favreau has done well with few movies he has directed including Iron Man and Made. Zooey Deschanel offers an excellent on screen presence as a love interest for Buddy. And, there's really nothing to say about James Caan as he is one of the best actors of all time.
This is fairly sentimental and corny film. But, that's what most people want for a solid holiday film. The plot and script isn't all that original but it's hard to knock the story as it is done with humor and charisma. The stand out performance by JamesCaan as caring father was very endearing and spot on. Overall, it is a very good family film that will shown on television on every holiday season.

Blue-Ray hd dvd movie review of Jingle All The Way
December 19, 2008
This movie has taken a lot of criticism and generally been laughed off as fairly bad movie. Any Conan O'Brien fan will recognize this movie every time Arnold "shows up" as a guest. It'sinherently absurd to picture the Terminator in a family film where he has to fight off other shoppers instead of robots. I think that's why this film has taken great many knocks. It's just hard to imagine the tough action hero in an unfamiliar setting. More so in a ridiculous setting.
Arnold plays Howie Langston, who is a father who has neglected to shop for Christmas. His home life is in peril due to the disconnect between him and his wife and son. Situation is furtherexacerbated by Ted the neighbor who has the hots for his wife. In order to redeem himself, he desperately wants to buy Turbo Man doll for his son. Of course his wife has warned him to buy it weeks ago. And, as most of us know, trying to buy the hottest toy is nearly impossible near the Christmas. He has to fight hoard of last minute shoppers as well as the villain Sinbad. Sinbad plays another dad himself who has to get the Turbo Man as well. Both of them fight for Turbo Man from one scene to next. Of course, being a holiday film, we sort of know the out come.
The acting is fairly decent considering we are talking about California's governor. He was surprisingly funny throughout the movie. I especially enjoyed the late Phil Hartman as the scheming single dad. Sinbad was Sinbad. Just there for comic relief and nothing more. Overall, there are no stand out acting or really bad acting for that matter.
There seems to be tendency to judge this film sorely based on absurdity of seeing Arnold in anything but an action film. If you ignore the Terminator playing a comedic role, I think you will enjoy this fluff film. It's decent holiday film aimed at children and family. Just don't expect too much and you will enjoy the ride.

Blue-Ray disc movie review of Dumb and Dumber
December 17, 2008
It takes a popular movie to be released Blu-ray when its initial release was on VHS. A lot of classics and popular science fiction films have been treated to Blu-ray release. However, not too many older comedies see the release on Blu-ray format. Dumb and Dumber was released in 1994 and it's still funny every time it's on cable television. Farrelly brother's directorial debut is truly funny from beginning to end. Just when you think they can't possibly be funnier or dumber, they prove you wrong. With simple plot, Farrelly brother packs in funny moments scene after scene.
Lloyd and Harry are two unemployed friends that somehow end up on a trip to Aspen, Colorado. Lloyd inadvertently stumbles upon kidnapping scheme when he finds the ransom money. Trying to be helpful he pledges himself to the task of returning the money to the woman who made the drop. This sounds like fairly boring movie with simple plot. But, each moment is filled withincredibly funny dialogue or physical comedy in series of ridiculous situations. Hot on their tail are criminals that think these guys are professionals.
Jim Carrey is a obvious choice as a funny comedian. The casting of Jeff Daniels as Harry is just brilliant. I think Jeff Daniels is funnier than Jim Carrey. Maybe it's because Daniels has had more dramatic roles instead of comedy. Jeff Daniels outshines Jim Carrey as the stupid but loyal friend. Farrelly brothers were not well known quality back in 1994. With this movie they launched their career. The story and jokes are funny from start to finish.
This movie is still funny and relevant today as it was back in 1994. It's no Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind epic. But, you still laugh out loud every time I watch this movie. You cringe and laugh at the antics of Harry and Lloyd. And, who can forget the perfect ending. Just when you think they'll get the happy ending, the directors throw the perfect change up.

Blu-Ray disc movie review of Horton Hears a Who
December 14, 2008
Seems like the Hollywood finally got it right with Dr. Seuss adaptation. They have failed spectacularly with The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat in my opinion. Filled with unfunny jokes and over the top acting, The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat both failed to deliver a satisfying Dr. Seuss story we've come to enjoy from our childhood. Maybe the live adaptation is not right for Dr. Seuss stories. Instead, the animation seems to be the answer. Horton Hears a Who is a far superior and enjoyable film than its predecessor.
Most of us are familiar with Dr. Seuss stories including Horton Hears a who. The story involves an outgoing elephant who accidentally hears a racy of tiny people known as the "whos" living on a flower. As the flower passes by he hears them talking and instinctively takes possession to protect the whoville. Opposing Horton is a mother Kangaroo who feels that Horton is a bad influence to the children. She thinks Horton is making it up and lying to the children. She is bent on destroying the flower while Horton protects the flower with all his might.
Jim Carey is hundred times better in the role as Horton than as The Grinch. He doesn't overact and shows tremendous heart portraying the caring elephant. Steve Carell is equally brilliant in his performance as the ever nervous mayor of the whoville. The interaction between both actors are funny and endearing. There are many supporting characters but the movie hinges on the performances and relationship between Horton and the Mayor.
With crisp and vibrant animation, Horton Hears a Who is perhaps the best adaptation of Dr. Seuss' story. This movie is really funny with original ideas and jokes that don't detract from the original work. It does away with toilet humors. The creators did an excellent job staying true to the message while making the film enjoyable and fresh. The creative people behind the film did an excellent job and they should be in charge of any future Dr. Seuss works.

Blu-Ray dvd movie review of Super Troopers
December 13, 2008
Some might pass this off as a stoner film with Police Academy twist. They would be wrong. This is far from being a typical stoner films. Little known comedy group, Broken Lizard, wrote and started in this low budget comedy film. What appears to be an average drug humor film turns out to be an excellent laugh fest from start to finish. The ensemble cast from Broken Lizard including the writer and director are all competent in acting and excellent in comedic situations.
The plot revolves around ridiculous and stupid antics from team of five Vermont State Troopers. Thorny, Farva, Mac, Foster, and Rabbit are all fairly incompetent jokesters. The central plot revolves around the mayor trying to shut down the police station to cut some budget. This plan gets complicated when a murder involving drugs some how occur on their strip of highway. The troopers proceed to try to solve this case to save their station and their job. Now, this doesn't sound like much of comedic situation. Except, there are absolutely hilarious situations and comedic moments throughout the movie.
The Broken Lizard group puts on a very competent performance from unknown casts. They might have good or bad reputation as comedic group. I have no idea since I have not heard or seen their performance prior to this movie. But, the casts are all very good actors. The five central characters including the director and writer Jay Chandraskehar all do very good job portraying the "super" troopers. It's not Oscar worthy stuff but I doubt we expect that kind of performance from a comedy movie involving 5 loser cops.
Overall, it is a great film with great pace and lots of funny physical humor. The film features terrific characters and terrific five leads. Even with low budget, the film does not feel cheap or rushed. I am looking forward to the sequel in 2010.

Blue-Ray hd movie review of Night Ath The Museum
December 1, 2008
This movie was little disappointing for me. I knew it was a family friendly movie. But, I didn't find it all that enjoyable. There were some funny moments in the movie. It had great premise but I don't quite see Ben Stiller as a family movie type of actor. Maybe I keep flashing back to those funny scenes in There's Something about Mary. Anyone expecting crude humor and jokes should look else where for their fix.
The movie is about a museum that comes to life due to a powerful spell from an Egyptian tablet. Ben Stiller plays Larry Daley, who is an lovable loser type of character perfected by Ben Stiller. He is a divorced father who is about to be evicted from an apartment. To keep his apartment and his son's respect, he accepts a security job at the museum. Obviously the museum's "condition" leads to some entertaining situations. Everything from animals to miniature human beings come alive and wreck havoc in the museum. There obligatory "bad" guys and Larry Daley's eventual triumph. It's reall predictable.
There are great stretches of film that drags on and feel incredibly slow. The second half picks up the pace with it's action sequences. The second half is great fun with all the things in the museum coming to life. However, Ben Stiller isn't the family movie type and he is fairly bland when he is not allowed to do some crude humor. It's fine for little kids and the parents that need to accompany them. Other than that, it is fairly forgettable movie.

Blue Streak blu-ray disc movie review
November 29, 2008
If you like Martin Lawrence, you'll likely love this movie. Martin Lawrence has perfected the comedies with ridiculous situations. Big Momma's House 1 and 2, National Security, Black Knight, and Nothing to Lose are all similar to this movie. If you liked any of these movies, you will enjoy this film as well. These movies are all ridiculous. Yet, Martin Lawrence makes them entertaining enough to watch another iteration.
The film begins with four thieves pulling of a jewel heist at a construction location. While Miles and Eddie work inside the building, Deacon stays above to watch for any trouble. Tulley waits in the car for the signal to drive them out. Miles succeeds stealing the diamond. Upon reaching the roof, Deacon promptly demands that he turn over the diamond. During the fracas, Eddie is killed off. Miles gets away and hides the diamond in the ventilation system of the building. At this moment, cops arrive and arrest Miles while Deacon gets away. Miles servers out his sentence and return to claim his diamond. Only, the finished building is now the headquarter of the police department. So, Miles transforms himself into a cop with forged credentials. This is where the fun begins.
Martin Lawrence does what he does in this movie. That is to say he is funny. And, Luke Wilson does an excellent job of portraying naive side kick to Lawrence's street smart "cop". Dave Chappelle as Tulley is fairly amusing as well. This is before the Chappelle show fame. I really liked Peter Greene's performance as the bad guy Deacon. There was no hint of comedic performance from him.
While the ending is really predictable, the ride to get there is pretty fun one. Ultimately, it is a silly movie with ridiculous premise. But, if you are fan of Martin Lawrence, you will most likely enjoy this comedy.

Blu-Ray dvd movie review of You Don’t Mess With The Zohan
November 28, 2008
Adam Sandler once again goes to his bread and butter formula in this movie. Just silly comedy from start to finish. A lot of the humors have are similar to that of his previous works such as The Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, and any other Sandler movies. He has tried the dramatic role in Reign Over Me, which was fairly good movie with good performance, but Sandler does his best work in this type of movie. So, don't expect serious drama. Instead, expect something off the wall and goofy. If you have proper expectation, you will most likely laugh a lot and forget about it immediately after.
Three writers, Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel, and Judd Apatow, deliver uneven script and gags. You can definitely tell which jokes were done by Sandler and which jokes were done by Apatow. Seems like all the comedy these days are either done by Sandler or Apatow. Which isn't bad if you like Apatow's or Sandler's work. The story is about an Israeli super commando wanting to be an hair stylist. Sandler fakes his death and moves to New York to realize his dream. He gets job at Dalia's hair salon. He offers crazy antics and sex after each hair cut. Eventually, his past catches up with him in the form of his nemesis and three goofy glory seekers. And of course, all manners of crazy and silly stuff happens in between.
Sandler, Turturro, Chriqui, and Schneider do adequate job. We all know what to expect from Sandler, Turturro, and Schneider. But, Chriqui has not been in many works except for Entourage. Even so, she is fairly likable in this movie.
All in all, it's a non stop comedy from start to finish. I couldn't stop laughing at the sheer silliness of the movie. If you want to spend few hours watching mindless fun movie, than this is a perfect film. The unrated version on the Blu-ray might offend some or might make you laugh harder.

Comedy hit Tropic Thunder Blu-Ray review
November 23, 2008

Lately, Ben Stiller has produced and started in a lot of lack luster comedy movies. The Heart Break Kid, Night at the Museum, and that god awful Envy to name a few. The Tropic Thunder has garnered a great hype through viral marketing and funny trailers. The movie delivers solid laughs along with great characters. This is one of the best comedy movie in last few years that has produced many unfunny comedy movies.
Ben Stiller does masterful job of spoofing various war movies such as Deer hunter and Platoon. More so, it is a great satire piece on the entire Hollywood movie making business.Stiller and his co-writer Justin Theroux penned a hillarious film that pokes fun at itself. I think hallmark of great comedy movie is the great dialogues that are remembered long after the release of the movie. There are so many funny dialogues between the great cast such as "you never go full retard." Instead of using already catch phrase and situation from war movies, it creates its own and manages to make it entirely original film.
The cast is nothing short of great. Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Jack Black all provide great performances throughout the film. The great casting doesn't end with main actors. I honestly did not know Les was Tom cruise until the middle of the movie. I don't really care for Tom Cruise but he was great as an heartless executive. The entire Hollywood machine is spoofed including the agents and gossip shows such as E!.
The story is about production of movie based on a "true" story from Vietnam War. Ben, Robert, and Jack portray actors that play the soldiers in the movie. There are conflicts and problems making the film. This forces the director to shoot the movie in "guerrilla" style in real jungle away from the movie set. Of course, they run into real drug runners. Ben Stiller's character thinks it's the movie and stays in character when they encounter these drug runners. It isn't much of story but it is one funny ride from start to finish. The Blu ray version offers many extras including the director's unrated cut. It is definitely worth buying the Blu ray version.

Old spy series remake Get Smart on Blu-ray
November 4, 2008

Get Smart is a fun movie for any age group. This movie should please anyone from kids to senior citizens. Steve Carrell delivers yet another excellent comedic performance. Any fan of The Office would feel right at home with this movie. The movie is absolutely funny and I was laughing from start to finish.
Even though this is a spy film, you should not expect Jason Bourne or James Bond type of action and story. This is comedy movie wrapped around a spy plot. This movie is not a parody. Instead, it is a tribute to any spy movies. It isn't as goofy as Austin Powell but comedic elements are still there. The plot is crips and fast without any slow prats. The Blu-ray should include many other funny spots that were cut from this movie.
The plot is not complicated and it is pretty simple. Steve Carrel plays Agent 86 who wishes to be field agent. He gets his chance when the HQ gets attacked and he is best suited to go into the field. There are many funny incidents and events that follow the mission from start to finish.
The film takes place in various places around the globe ending in Disney hall. Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell has decent chemistry and deliver pretty solid comedic performance. This is solid comedy you should not miss.
