Ghostbusters Blu Ray Review

ghostbusters 300x300 Ghostbusters Blu Ray

Twenty five years after the release, the Ghostbusters is one of my favorite films of all time. If you were growing up during the 80s, you will most likely remember the original, the sequel, and the bombardment of animation series. A lot of us gobbled up everything related to Ghostbusters. Even with limited technology, the Ghostbusters displayed great special effects along with great story and even greater dialogues. Even though the film is clearly aimed at younger kids, the jokes and dialogues are funny to the adults. I find myself laughing hard at the film even as an adult.

Ghostbusters is a comedic gem that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Three scientists, Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler decide to start up a business to deal with paranormal beings after being let go by the University. This gets them a case dealing with Dana Barrett, played by Sigourney Weaver, where they have to deal with portal openings in her refrigerator. From there, the Ghostbusters have to deal with the evil forces that threaten to destroy entire Manhattan. The story is rather simple but very fun.

A lot of the credit for the movie’s success rests on the funny dialogue as well as great directing and acting. Bill Murray as the funny Dr. Venkman is one of the most memorable characters played by Bill Murray. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis round out the perfect partners for the Ghostbusters. Without a doubt, this is the best movie directed by Ivan Reitman. He’s had hand in some semi successful films since the Ghostbusters and its sequel. However, they don’t come close to the greatness of Ghostbusters movies. With the release of the new video game as well as the new Blu-ray version, this would be great time for new generation to experience this fantastic movie before the release of the third installment in 2012.

Black Sheep Blu Ray Review

May 28, 2009

black sheep 237x300 Black Sheep Blu Ray Review

Black Sheep is Chris Farley’s second foray into comedy movie. The first one, Tommy boy, was a big success for the former Saturday Night Live funny man. Naturally, he followed up with equally funny Black Sheep. Christ Farley made one more feature film, Beverly Hills Ninja, before he tragically passed away. While Black Sheep is funny, it feels like a poor attempt to replicate the Tommy Boy formula. The plot changes but the characters seem have transferred from Tommy boy. While this may not be a bad thing, it is somewhat disappointing that they couldn’t come up with original movie.

Chris Farley plays Mike Donnelly while David Spade plays Steve Dodds. Essentially, Mike’s brother is running for the governor’s seat and Steve Dodds is hired to keep Mike out of trouble during the election. This is basically the same situation set up in the Tommy Boy where David Spade’s character is charged with looking out for the bumbling Tommy Callahan. The rehashed characters don’t detract from the laughter from the duo. If you were fan of Farley and Spade, you will most likely ignore the redundant characters and enjoy the film. On the other hand, if you are not a fan, you might find it boring and trite.

The main attraction of the movie is Chris Farley. He was extremely talented comedian who always put smile on my face. The guy is non-stop from one sequence to next. David Spade fills in nicely as the side kick and foil to Farley’s comedy. Another delight was Gary Busey as the crazy sergeant Drake Savage who turns out to be a “good” guy. The entire movie is based on the chemistry between the main characters and the side characters. And, the interaction between Farley and Spade was one of the best combos. It is shame that Farley passed away so early in his life. He could have surpassed all other former SNL member as the greatest comedian to grace the big screen.

Major League Blu Ray Review

major league 300x300 Major League Blu Ray Review

Major League stands as one of my favorite baseball film. It’s not in the same category as The Natural or Field of Dreams as Major League is a comedic film. Even so, Major League is a very good baseball movie. Made in 1989 when Cleveland Indians were the punching bag in the MLB, the movie does great job of portraying a bumbling and unprofessional baseball club. The movie has little bit of everything that makes a fantastic sports movie. A great cast, a lovable underdog, and a great plot to tie it up all together.

There is a simple but effective plot that drives the film. Rachel Phelps buys the Cleveland Indians after her husband dies. She loathes the city of Cleveland and hatches a plan to move the team to another city. In order to accomplish this, she sets out to field a worst team in the history of the game to intentionally lose. It’s fairly predictable how this will turn out in the end. The team comes together and actually wins their division. The real shining moments are the comedic situations and interactions between players, fans, and even Bob Uecker as the drunken announcer. The movie is none stop laugh from start to finish.

The cast of the movie was absolutely wonderful. As mentioned earlier, Bob Uecker plays the drunken sports caster. Tom Berenger plays the veteran catcher. Charlie Sheen the wild pitcher. I especially enjoyed Wesley Snipes as the speedy player who has trouble hitting the ball. And, who can forget Dennis Haysbert as the Pedro Cerrrano who can’t hit the curve ball. This is movie I would easily recommend to anyone including none sports fans.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Blu Ray Review

May 6, 2009

ferris buellers day off 300x300 Ferris Buellers Day Off Blu Ray Review

Besides watching The Price is Right, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off might be the most perfect viewing when you are sick or pretending to be sick to stay home. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is just a fun movie to watch. I consider this movie to be one of the classic comedies of the 80s. Even after 20 years, the movie stays funny because the subject of the movie is still relevant. The movie portrays the school as this oppressive institution where students go through the motion.

Ferris Bueller, a high school senior, deciding to skip school and have a fun day. He starts off with deceiving his mother. He pretends to be really sick and fools his mother into thinking that he is very ill. He successfully fools his mother into thinking he is sick. But his sister knows better and tries to foil his entire day at every turn. With his best friend Cameron, he hatches plan to get his girlfriend, Sloan, out of the school to skip the day with them. They hatch a plan that involves telling the teacher that Sloan’s grandmother is dead. The Dean of students, Mr. Edward Rooney is suspicious and calls Sloan’s dad. Of course on the other end of the phone is Cameron impersonating Sloan’s dad. The plan works and the three of them go off on an adventure for the day.

The entire day involves wrecking Ferrari, being part of parade, and impersonating a sausage magnate. The day ends with him making it just in time for his mother and father to see that he is indeed sick. The writer/director John Hughes does great justice to the teenage movie genres. He gives us a great story that deal with school and students who ultimately want more freedom. Matthew Broderick plays a great wise ass student who out maneuvers everyone from his parents to the teachers. Ultimately, it’s a fun flick to watch on your “sick” day.

The Spirit Blu Ray

The Spirit Blu Ray Review

the spirit 300x300 The Spirit Blu Ray

The Spirit mostly bombed at the box office. For a good reason. Most of the people were probably expecting 300 or Sin City type of movie. The movie style and Frank Miller’s name attached to the movie most likely signaled movie closer to 300 and Sin City. The Spirit is entirely different movie. 300 was action packed stylish movie while Sin City was stylistic and gritty in its execution. The Spirit is more comedic than action. While it does retain that Sin City style, its over the top comic and corny lines make the movie barely enjoyable.

The story is about a cop who comes back from death to fight criminals, mainly the Octopus played by Samuel L Jackson. The basic story is that Octopus created some drug that could prolong the life. Needless to say, Octopus and the Spirit both take the drug and duke it out over the course of the movie. Eva Mendes plays the old fling who comes back to get her hands on some treasure. There are little bit more to the story but not much.

This is film that’s all style and very little substance. I know a lot of the viewers were expecting Sin City and instead, got this comedic effort. You really can’t go wrong with Samuel L Jackson for Octopus but rest of the characters and story are just boring. I was indifferent from start to finish and was neither satisfied nor dissatisfied. All in all, it is a very forgettable film from Frank Miller.

Blu-ray dvd movie review of Trading Places

April 16, 2009

trading places 300x300 Blu ray dvd movie review of Trading Places

The younger generation haven’t had chance to watch any decent Eddie Murphy comedies like some of the older folks like myself. Besides the Shrek franchise, Meet Dave and Norbit are some of the worst Eddie Murphy films. You really wouldn’t have expected that from an actor who made us laugh with Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, and Coming to America. Trading Places is another comedy gem with Eddie Murphy. Trading Places was one of the first movie to feature the SNL funnyman Eddie Murphy.

The movie is about an experiment/bet placed by two rich Duke Brothers, think of Lehman brothers. They bet that with right environment, anybody can become a rich upper-class person and anybody can become poor. To carry out this bet, they forcibly put Louis Winthorpe III in bad situation and put Billy Ray in his place. Louis, played by Dan Akroyd is rich investment type whereas Billy Ray is low life conman. This sets up classic mistaken identity/role reversal film. Louis is put through some hardship and Billy is pampered in rich lifestyle. One day, Billy overhears the Duke Brothers talking about the bet and decides to take revenge on them along with Louis. So they pool their knowledge. Louis brings the financial market knowledge and Billy brining in the criminal side. Together, they hatch plan to make themselves rich and ruin Duke Brothers.

Simply put, this is one of the funniest Eddie Murphy movie. Along with Dan Akroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis, Eddie Murphy delivers one of his best performances in this film. Released back in 1983, this is one of the funniest films of the 1980s. I might also add that it’s feel good movie where the greedy bastards get their due. And, it’s somewhat ironic that the Lehman’s fate is somewhat similar to that of Duke Brothers. Overall, movie you can appreciate in any time.

blu-ray disc movie review of Role Models

role models blu ray disc movie review of Role Models

The director of somewhat cult favorite Wet Hot American Summer brings us another comedy in Role Models. Instead of the romantic comedy, David Wain goes for relationship comedy between two adults and two kids. Amidst some cheap and crude joke, David Wain manages to deliver a nice message, do what makes you happy.

The story starts out with two friends Wheeler and Danny, Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd, working for energy drink company. They work as spokesmen who go from school to school promoting their energy drink as an alternative to the drugs. One day, Danny’s girlfriend, Elizabeth Banks, breaks up with him. This causes Danny to go little crazy after one of the speech. Both of them end up getting arrested. The judge gives them choice of jail time or volunteer for an organization that mentor’s kids, sort of like Boys Club. On the advice of his girlfriend, Danny and Wheeler take the volunteer duty. They end up with two odd kids that ultimately lead to some funny and somewhat touching moments.

I think it’s fairly easy to say that the “journey” leads both parties to happier place. Paul Rudd and Seann Scott are very good as two friends that get into trouble. Both don’t wander too far from their stereotypical roles. Scott plays the toilet humor guy to sarcastic Rudd. The two actors who play the kids are very good. Christopher Mintz-Plasse who played the McLovin is hilarious as the introvert who enjoys the dungeon and dragon role playing kid. Bobb’e J. Thompson is also great as foul mouthed troublesome kid. The interaction between the four makes the film worth watching. The message of “do what makes you happy” ultimately plays out as you would expect in the end.

Blu-Ray disc movie review of Marley and Me

March 31, 2009

marley and me Blu Ray disc movie review of Marley and Me

I was kind of surprised at some of the bad reviews of Marley and Me. A lot of the critics have penned this film as overly syrupy fluff not worth the ticket price. And, from a jaded perspective, it might be true. After watching the film, I can whole heartily recommend this film to anyone. The film has its sweet moments. But, it is only part larger picture that includes some touching and sad moments.

The movie is based on the book written by John Grogan, a journalist. It’s a true story about his family’s relationship with the dog named Marley. More importantly, it is the relationship between John and his Dog. Marley, called world’s worst dog, causes a lot of trouble from the start for John and his wife Jenny. The events in their lives are marked with hilarious mishaps caused by Marley. This not another buddy film between a dog and a man. I think it’s an honest portrayal of deep connection between Marley and John. Any dog owners who have ultimately buried their dog can sympathize with this movie.

John Grogan chronicled Marley’s mishaps in the newspaper in Miami and in Philadelphia. Upon Marley’s death, John wrote eulogy that was read by many readers. This prompted John to write the best seller dedicated to his beloved dog. This film might deserve some of the flaks. But, as someone who has owned dogs and various other pets, it’s really easy to love this film. Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston do terrific job. But, it’s the dog that takes the central role and center stage. The scene where the dog ultimately dies should put tears on most movie goers.

Blu-Ray hd movie review of Groundhog Day

March 19, 2009

groundhog day 300x300 Blu Ray hd movie review of Groundhog Day

Bill Murray earned himself Oscar nomination for Lost in Translation. He should have been nominated and won the Oscar for Groundhog Day. Had it not gone up against Schindler’s List and Tom Hanks in Philadelphia, I think Bill Murray and the Groundhog Day could have garnered Oscar nominations. This quirky science fiction/fantasy film had great script, great direction, and great acting. The movie gets better with time and it is still enjoyable.

The movie revolves around Phil the weatherman. For some strange reason, he has relived the same day over and over again while on assignment to cover the Groundhog. Along for the ride are his producer, Rita played by Andie MacDowell, and the cameraman named Larry. As you can imagine, there are some funny and interesting situation that go along with this dilemma. At first, Phil is confused, followed by him taking advantage of the situation in various ways like robbing the bank and hooking up with some stranger. But, as days go by, he can’t have what he truly wants, Rita. The ultimate question is whether he can end the endless cycle of same day.

The film could have been tiring if Phil did same thing every day. On the contrary, Phil grows as human being and matures in one day, the same day. He goes from shallow selfish person to someone everyone wants to be friends with. The film doesn’t seem forced or unnatural. The progression of story flows naturally to the convincing and gratifying ending. Bill Murray manages to infuse a great humor into a movie that sends a great overall message. It manages to be relevant today as it was in 1993. And, just as funny.

Blu-Ray dvd movie review of The Princess Bride

March 16, 2009

princess bride 300x300 Blu Ray dvd movie review of The Princess Bride

Written by William Goldman, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Robin Wright Penn star in this classic fairy tale satire/spoof called Princess Bride. It is easy to see why Princess Bride is loved by so many people all across the age group. It is an intelligent spoof film that takes aim at several genres including fairy tales, swashbuckling, love story, and an adventure. Director Rob Reiner deftly brings weaves good performance and even better script into a winning film.

The story opens with a grandfather reading a story for a boy. The story takes place in Florin, an imaginary kingdom inhabited with heroes and mythical creatures. The story revolves around a beautiful young woman named Buttercup who falls in love with her farmhand named Westley. Westley runs off to find fame and fortune only to run into the Dread Pirate Roberts. Years later, Buttercup is engaged to wed the prince. However, she is kidnapped by three miscreants. They trio are chased by mysterious masked man. This begins the hilarious fairy tale fantasy.

The Princess Bride is a classic film that stands the test of time. The famous lines are unforgettable and as funny today as they were when the movie was released. The great acting and equally amazing story is priceless. How can we forget the “As you wish” or “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, You killed my father, prepare to die.”
