princess bride 300x300 Blu Ray dvd movie review of The Princess Bride

Written by William Goldman, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Robin Wright Penn star in this classic fairy tale satire/spoof called Princess Bride. It is easy to see why Princess Bride is loved by so many people all across the age group. It is an intelligent spoof film that takes aim at several genres including fairy tales, swashbuckling, love story, and an adventure. Director Rob Reiner deftly brings weaves good performance and even better script into a winning film.

The story opens with a grandfather reading a story for a boy. The story takes place in Florin, an imaginary kingdom inhabited with heroes and mythical creatures. The story revolves around a beautiful young woman named Buttercup who falls in love with her farmhand named Westley. Westley runs off to find fame and fortune only to run into the Dread Pirate Roberts. Years later, Buttercup is engaged to wed the prince. However, she is kidnapped by three miscreants. They trio are chased by mysterious masked man. This begins the hilarious fairy tale fantasy.

The Princess Bride is a classic film that stands the test of time. The famous lines are unforgettable and as funny today as they were when the movie was released. The great acting and equally amazing story is priceless. How can we forget the “As you wish” or “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, You killed my father, prepare to die.”

Truly beautiful transfer of one of the best movies ever made. If you have it already, this is a worthy upgrade. If you’ve never seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so.

    inconceivable!
Another classic, another favorite of mine. Of course, I own the Dread Pirate Roberts edition, unbeknowst that a 20th Anniversary Edition would come out the following year. *sigh* But what can you do? I always annoy my friends when they buy DVDs cause I tell them “You should wait 2 years on that one. By then it’ll be 10 years and they’ll probably have another special version out.” LOL. Anywoo, I love this movie because like Peter Falk’s character says in the movie, its got a bit of everyting from action to romance to thriller…you name it. Not to mention the endless list of fabulous actors like Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn, Christopher Guest, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Andre The Giant, Fred Savage, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal…every generation is going to know somebody in this cast! Its a classic the whole family, any age, loves. Timesless.

Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya . . .
Three thieves (a brilliant but whiney little guy, a giant, a drunken Spanish swordsman) kidnap a princess-to-be, to take her into a neighboring kingdom, to kill her, and thus start a war between the two kingdoms. But, they are followed by a masked man in black. Oh, and the fiancee of the future princess, is not her true love; her true love, a poor farmhand, died five years earlier.

Oh, by the way, the above-mentioned story is a story-within-a-story. The whole thing is a grandfather reading a story to his stuck-in-bed-sick grandson.

So far, we have all the ingredients of a standard, run-of-the-mill, mediocre fantasy/fairy tale story — Willow (Special Edition) comes to mind. It is far, far above that. What makes the difference? Many factors.

The whole movie has a wonderful touch of whimsy to it. You know it is not a serious story, but neither is it a farce or a spoof. It is a perfect mix of serious and tongue-in-cheek. The Inigo Montoya story-line, of a man dedicating his life to avenging the senseless death of his father, is a fascinating mix of dead-serious and “Is he really serious, or is this a joke?”

I also had the impression that the actors in the film had decided two things: they were going to have fun; they were going to do this movie right. Cary Elwes as the masked man in black, was perfect. Mandy Pantinkin as Inigo Montoya gave the performance of his career, I think. In a bonus feature interview of the DVD, he said he wept when he first saw the end-product, as he was awed by how well it had turned out.

Andre the Giant (Andre Roussimoff) gave an eye-opening performance as Fezzik, the gentle, powerful, not-particularly-bright giant. Wallace Shawn is the weasel-like Vizzini, the incredibly smart boss thief. Robin Wright handles the Princess Buttercup role just fine, and Chris Sarandon is equally good as Prince Humperdinck. I loved it when we get the brief roles of Billy Crystal as Miracle Max, a possibly-washed-up magician who might just have one more trick up his sleeve, and Carol Kane as Valerie, his joyously-good nag of a wife. Christopher Guest as the six-fingered man was okay, but not as impressive as I hoped the villain would be.

Oh, and what about the grandfather-grandson duo that are the backdrop to the story? Fred Savage gives us a grandson who initially reeks of “Oh, do I have to” but ends up as “Don’t stop!” Peter Falk is ideal as the grandfather, who knows how to spin a yarn perfectly.

Now, we have whimsy and acting, but there are other ingredients to this movie’s greatness. Rob Reiner does to this movie what he did to Stand By Me (Deluxe Edition): he took a good story and translated it to on-screen magic, with artful directing. The musical score was also just right. Another factor was the dialogue. This movie is full of quotes that stand out, and only fit this movie. Wallace Shawn’s “inconceivable” became a standing joke. Mandy Patinkin, doing a good Spanish accent, with “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die” was great, no matter how many times he said it.

With the actors doing almost all their own stunts, acrobatics, and sword fighting, the action sequences were wonderful. This includes one of the best sword-play in movie history.

In short, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, which does everything right. I can’t believe it took me twenty years to find it!

    Damn-it ! stop mixing Reviews.
To pay $30 or more without a real Blu-Ray review is nuts. Will anyone help by sending feedback to Amazon about mixing reviews. If I am looking for Blu-Ray I don’t want to read something about DVD or VHS. This is silly and it looks like its up to us to stop it. Thank’s for your help.

Keep in mind that I love this movie and have owned it on VHS and standard DVD. However in these economic times to ask $31 for the Blu Ray version is ridiculous. I’ll see how much it is in 6 months.

The Princess Bride is probably my all-time favorite movie. A perfect blend of a fairy tale and humor, together with some very heartfelt scenes such as Peter Falk reading the book. The cast is excellant from top to bottom and I still laugh at lines that I have had memorized for years. A perfect film to share with your family.

    THE PERFECT FAIRYTALE
This is my favorite Rob Reiner movie, and William Goldman’s screenplay is a pure delight. The cast is fabulous, the cinematography excellent, the stunts great ( particularly the sword fight between Mandy Patinkin, as Inigo, and Cary Elwes as Westley ). The satire, wit, and dead-pan humor of the script, though, is what makes the movie pure heaven to watch. No one should be without this film ( note: I did not say ‘this edition’ of the film- which isn’t all that grand for the extras you get ).

One of the best movies ever. Our whole family can practically quote the entire script and we still love it. Lines from this movie are incorporated into everyday conversation. Long live the Dread Pirate Roberts!

DON’T BUY THIS DVD (even though the movie rocks!)
This DVD’s anti-piracy technology is as dumb as a doorstop. I get the green screen when trying to play my LEGALLY-PURCHASED DVD on an average DVD player hooked up to an average LCD TV. Since there is no way for a consumer to know whether this DVD will play on their home system, the best bet is to AVOID IT ALTOGETHER and read the book instead, or watch some previous DVD release that isn’t tainted with this ANTI-CONSUMER technology.

That said, this is an awesome movie. Too bad the people who own it have decided that we’re all criminals.
