planet earth blu ray 300x300 BBC Planet Earth Blu Ray Review

Planet Earth is a worthy documentary series that looks not just at the animals and plants in remote areas, but at the ever-changing ecosystems that look prone to collapse in the near future. This is the sort of program that the BBC excels at and makes better than anyone else. And David Attenborough does an excellent job narrating as usual. In short, this is the definitive nature documentary regarding planet Earth as a whole.

The camera-work is fantastic and the sections at the end of each programme where they look at how certain parts were filmed is interesting as you see the dedication of the crew who go out to these desolate spots for months to film sections that will last only a couple of minutes on screen. Much of the wildlife has barely been filmed and some such as the wonderfully agile Wild Amur leopard have probably only been seen by very few living people in the flesh.

Each episode explains how the animals live in particular habitats. It shows captivating (often ugly) descriptions of this habitat and the animals there in a breathtaking way…

Some of the sequences shown are very brave, most notably the struggles of the polar bear to find food on the ever-decreasing Arctic ice. Too many nature documentaries succumb to "niceness" and show only cute animals looking sweet. To understand how Man is changing the planet it is crucial to show how wasting energy may be affecting wildlife in distant lands (or seas). Sadly it is also important as it seems all too likely that much of the footage will become museum property in the near future, showing subsequent generations the marvelous diversity of life Earth used to enjoy.

And, all these shots/sequences are filmed entirely in High Definition. The influence of the IMAX pioneers is evident in the slow, careful camera pans. The "British" approach is less bombastic and much more informative.

Also the thrust of the series seems to be on how wonderful and breathtaking the planet is, without delving into questions about how humans are impacting these ecosystems (the episode on polar bears was an exception - but even this didn't dig into too much detail). In Canada like many others I grew up with "The Nature of Things" with David Suzuki, which really delved deeply into the science and human issues. This series seems to concentrate mostly on great photography, jumping from one area of the globe to another without pausing for too long to get into any real "details".

Overall, this series is a must for all nature documentary fans.

Reviewer: Hani,
If you love nature, you should purchase these series. It is as if you are there. No need to waste money and go for a holiday when you can be there by watching these series in a good HD/LED TV using Blu Ray!

These series are also very educative. I definately learnt a lot about nature. The best thing is that these series were also used to educate my children. Now, they do not have to memorise geography! Looked at many movies of 'nature' but nothing is comparable to these.

THis series certainly delves into the realm we as humans hardly see... the natural habitat of animal and plant life. However, I would like to see more understanding of the passion and link of animals to their families and ultimately their link to other species other than the predator eating and hunting its prey.... there are after all other drives such as those shown in films such as born free, Gorillas in the mist and the documentaries of jane goodall...The Horse Keeper: The Healing Gifts of Painting and Writing About HorsesAutumn of blessed Acres: Service Dog (Volume 1)Autumn of Blessed Acres, bolt and Lily service dogsThe Man Who Listens to Horses: The Story of a Real-Life Horse Whisperer

It's amazing to realise that some of the scenes in 'Planet Earth' AREN'T computer generated, that they actually exist somewhere out there on this planet.

This series has it all, from the first ever intimate footage of snow leopards in the wild, to aerial footage revealing the strategy of a pack of hunting dogs; and from birds-of-paradise and their surreal ritual dances, to a pack of hunting sea snakes.

There is hilarious footage of a would-be rapist tree-frog trying to break up a mating couple, as well as more tender shots of pumas and polar bears teaching their young ones to hunt. One of the most eerie sequences features lions and elephants fighting at night around a waterhole. The sight of a pack of lions bringing an elephant down is unexpected and amazing.

Some of the habitats themselves are surreal, ranging from oceanic abysses populated by 'vampire squid' and other Lovecraftian organisms, to a hundred metre high mound of bat droppings, which is home sweet home for millions of cockroaches.

Each episode focuses on a different kind of environment (mountains, tropical forests, deserts etc.) and each features a mini-documentary at the end, revealing how the filming took place. I was amazed at the length some of the filmmakers went to, ranging from extreme tedium to extreme danger, with moments of humour in between.

'Planet Earth' is a truly stunning series, and reveals some of the majesty and infinite variety of the natural world.

You can't beat the price I paid for this complete set of DVD's. I paid quite a bit less than I would have purchasing the same set in a store or other online sites.

Planet Earth is amazing in blueray, and this BBC edition is definitely the way to go. The narration is much better. The video is exactly the same, otherwise.

Reviewer: linda,
I purchased the HD version and none of the discs would play. The HD player would display "no disc". My new Blue Ray player displays "cannot read disc". So I'm basically out of luck and the money I spent. I'm very unhappy with this purchase.

This did not work and I could not return because I had opened it. I had to open it to find out it did not work.

At full price, this item is worth every penny. That I got it for less than half price from a seller makes it an even better purchase.

First of all, the seller, Source Media Group, was great. The item was fulfilled by Amazon, so my Prime benefits applied and the product was like new, just as it was listed. I'm very happy with the transaction and the seller.

The DVD content is just outstanding, which is to be expected from such a much-lauded television show. Some of the footage is simply unbelievable and I find myself being awed and amazed every time I watch. Some of this is information you know and some of it is brand new; part of the appeal of this set is the learning opportunity it creates for adults and kids alike.

I have watched this set with people ranging in age from 9 to 50 and everyone enjoys it. It's also a go-to; when there's nothing new out on disc and nothing good on television, I know I'll find this entertaining and engaging.

Yes, it's long, but it's a big world, right? I can't imagine anyone regretting the purchase of Planet Earth and I really think every home and classroom (at least, every science classroom) should have this set. Of particular interest: the caribou migration on disc one and all of the undersea stuff.

This entire DVD set is a don't miss, must have piece of work for pretty much everyone.

    HD misunderstood
I purchased the dvd series Planet Earth in HD. I had been told it was fine to play on plain dvd machines. I sent it to Australia for my daughter to play on her computer and it will not. Not the product’s fault as the box says play only on HD players. It might be nice if when advertising something so selective, that the perameters are spelled out for those of us who are not so totally tech savvy. It was not a waste I guess as she will donate it somewhere, but I wish I had known.
